Cherry Blossom Forecast for 2025:Early Blooms Expected in Northern Japan

    Date: 2025-01-23
This year's cherry blossoms are expected to bloom around the average time or slightly earlier in the Kanto region and to the west, while they are likely to bloom earlier in northern Japan.

This winter has seen a significant influx of cold air from December to early January, resulting in a colder winter than in recent years, with temperatures around or slightly below average. As a result, the breaking of dormancy is expected to be around the average level but stronger than in recent years.

While warm days have continued in late January, February may see slightly lower temperatures, particularly in western Japan. On the other hand, March is predicted to have higher temperatures again. Therefore, in the regions from Kanto to the west, the blooming will not be extremely early, but rather around the average time or slightly earlier.
In northern Tohoku and Hokkaido, the higher temperatures since January are expected to lead to earlier blooming, especially in Hokkaido, where blooms are anticipated to be about a week earlier than average.

2025 Sakura Forecast: What to Expect from Japan's Cherry Blossoms This Year

Whether you’re planning a trip to Tokyo, Kyoto, or Hokkaido, I’ll break down when and where you can catch the best blooms.

🌊 Hokkaido & Tohoku Region: Late April Blooms 🌊

If you’re heading north, I recommend Hokkaido and the Tohoku region for late April cherry blossoms. Here’s what you can expect:

Sapporo (Hokkaido): April 22 (usually May 1)
Picture this: modern cityscapes framed by delicate pink blossoms. I love how Sapporo’s streets and parks transform into a pastel paradise during sakura season. Don’t miss Maruyama Park, where cherry trees line the paths like nature’s confetti.

Hakodate (Hokkaido): April 20 (usually April 28)
Combine cherry blossoms with stunning views of Hakodate Bay, and you’ve got a recipe for Insta-perfection. I always recommend Goryokaku Park, with its star-shaped fort—it’s a must-visit.

Hirosaki (Aomori): April 16 (usually April 22)
Hirosaki Castle Park is one of my favorite cherry blossom spots in Japan. With over 2,500 trees, it feels like stepping into a fairytale. The castle ruins and blooming trees create a scene straight out of a postcard.

Sendai (Miyagi): April 2 (usually April 8)
I love Sendai’s Mikamine Park for its peaceful vibe. The cherry-lined paths and serene atmosphere make it a perfect escape.

🏙 Kanto & Koshinetsu Region: Mid-March to Early April 🏙

If you’re starting your trip in Tokyo or nearby areas, the Kanto region is where the cherry blossom magic begins. Here’s what I suggest:

Tokyo: March 19 (usually March 24)
Tokyo’s cherry blossoms are legendary, and I always head to Chidorigafuchi. Rent a boat and paddle along the moat, surrounded by a tunnel of pink blooms. Ueno Park and Shinjuku Gyoen are also top picks.

Yokohama: March 22 (usually March 25)
Just a short train ride from Tokyo, Yokohama’s Sankeien Garden offers a tranquil cherry blossom experience. I love how the historic buildings and blooming trees create a picturesque combo.

Nagano: April 5 (usually April 11)
I recommend Matsumoto Castle for a stunning blend of cherry blossoms and samurai history. The snow-capped Alps in the background? Just icing on the cake.

🌊 Tokai & Hokuriku Region: Late March to Early April 🌊

Central Japan has some hidden cherry blossom gems. Here’s where I’d go:

Nagoya: March 21 (usually March 24)
Nagoya Castle is the star of the show here. I love how the castle grounds come alive with cherry blossoms, creating a perfect mix of history and natural beauty.

Kanazawa: March 26 (usually April 3)
Kenrokuen Garden is one of my favorite spots in Japan, and it’s even more magical during cherry blossom season. I always take my time strolling through the landscaped paths and admiring the blooms reflected in the garden’s ponds.

🏮 Kansai Region: Late March to Early April 🏮

The Kansai region is a cherry blossom hotspot, with Kyoto and Osaka leading the way. Here’s what I recommend:

Kyoto: March 23 (usually March 26)
Kyoto is my ultimate cherry blossom destination. I always start at the Philosopher’s Path and make my way to the towering pagoda of Toji Temple. Don’t miss Maruyama Park, where a massive weeping cherry tree takes center stage.

Osaka: March 22 (usually March 27)
Osaka Castle Park is a must-visit, with over 3,000 cherry trees surrounding the historic castle. I love how the combination of history and natural beauty feels unbeatable.

Nara: March 24 (usually March 28)
Nara Park is famous for its friendly deer, but during cherry blossom season, it becomes a pink wonderland. I can’t get enough of the deer frolicking under blooming trees—it’s adorable!

🌊 Chugoku & Shikoku Region: Late March 🌊

For a quieter cherry blossom experience, I suggest heading to the Chugoku and Shikoku regions:

Hiroshima: March 22 (usually March 25)
Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park is a poignant yet beautiful place to enjoy cherry blossoms. I find that the blooms add a touch of hope and renewal to this historic site.

Takamatsu (Kagawa): March 22 (usually March 27)
Ritsurin Garden is a masterpiece of Japanese landscaping, and the cherry blossoms make it even more enchanting. I always feel like I’ve stepped into a painting when I visit.

🏝 Kyushu Region: Mid to Late March 🏝

Southern Japan gets an early start on cherry blossom season. Here’s where I’d go:

Fukuoka: March 20 (usually March 22)
Maizuru Park, with its cherry-lined paths and views of Fukuoka Castle, is a local favorite. I love the park’s nighttime illuminations—they’re especially magical.

Kumamoto: March 21 (usually March 22)
Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s most impressive castles, and the cherry blossoms make it even more breathtaking. I always make time to visit during sakura season.
