    The History of Sarumawashi

Sarumawashi, literally meaning "monkey dancing," has a rich history spanning over a thousand years in Japan. Initially, it was a religious ritual intended to protect the horses of warriors. Over time, it evolved into a popular form of festival entertainment, performed across Japan from temples to imperial courts.
Today, Sarumawashi is recognized as one of Japan's oldest and most traditional performing arts, alongside Noh and Kabuki. It features acrobatic stunts and comedic skits performed by highly trained macaque monkeys. Despite facing near extinction due to urbanization and the rise of automobiles, the establishment of the Suo Sarumawashi Association successfully brought this ancient art form back to life.
The ongoing popularity of Sarumawashi lies in the charm and agility of the Japanese macaque monkeys, showcasing their natural physical prowess through a combination of acrobatics, comical skits, and dances.

    Combination between Trainer and Monkey

The trainers, known as "Sarumawashi-shi," play a crucial role in these performances. They form a deep bond with the monkeys, training them with patience and care. This relationship is evident in the way the monkeys respond to their trainers, performing complex routines with precision and enthusiasm. The trust and mutual respect between the trainer and the monkey are key to the success of the show.
The performances typically feature trained monkeys that execute a variety of tricks and stunts, showcasing their agility, intelligence, and charm.
